I know you’re being careful with your personal information. But do you know how careful other organizations are being with your information? Washington State man caught emailing spyware to acquaintancesA 31-year-old man from the state of Washington made friends within an Internet gaming community, then tried to steal their identities. The man developed a “trojan horse” program, disguised it as links to movie files and emailed it to unsuspecting people. The spyware embedded itself on the individual’s computer giving the criminal access to personal data, passwords, and other financial details. The man many thought was just a friendly guy sharing their love for computer games has pleaded guilty to fraud. Study shows people fear identity theft but are doing nothing about itThe National Crime Prevention Council surprised no one by releasing the results of a study that named identity theft as the #1 consumer complaint for the seventh consecutive year. Hacked university database puts Social Security numbers at riskA hacker got his hands on the Social Security numbers of over 1,200 people when he infiltrated a University of Missouri server. The computer was used to house the Research Board Grant Application System as well as payroll information for the researchers. While grant applicants sat at home with their fingers crossed waiting to hear if they were getting funding, an identity thief was running his fingers through their personal data and working on securing his own funding for two days before detected. IRS taxpayer data missing from local government26 computer tapes belonging to none other than the Internal Revenue Service recently disappeared from City Hall in Kansas City, Missouri. The tapes had been sitting around unmonitored by local officials and an internal breach of security has not been ruled out.
