The Dow Jones industrial average plunged as many as 546 points in trading today, erasing its 2007 gains in just hours.
The market closed with the index down 415 points, or 3.29 percent, at 12,216. The NASDAQ lost 97.
The Dow had its worst day since Sept. 17, 2001, the first trading day after the 9/11 terror attacks, when it closed down 685, or 7.13 percent.
